AI on Gabriola

Taking the arts on Gabriola a big step into the future, The Gabriola Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present a working prototype of the world’s first AI-module, designed for  fully autonomous artistic creation, evaluation and appreciation.

We are especially proud to introduce this artistic breakthrough at the 21st Annual Thanksgiving Studio Tour on Gabriola Island. Known as ‘The Isle of the Arts’ for more than 20 years, Gabriola has an artistic community celebrated far and wide for its exceptional range of talent and skill in both traditional and contemporary media. What is AI?

Artistic Intelligence® Neural Networks are a cutting-edge development at the intersection of cognitive and aesthetic theory. Capable of producing, critically evaluating and responding to internally generated stimuli, these networks emulate the full range of neuronal processes involved in artistic creation and appreciation. That means they can autonomously model all the formal and semantic aspects of contemporary artistic practice, using a QUAD Core Creation engine based on  Markov Chain Algorithms like the one shown here.

How does it work?

Using the same revolutionary neural engine as Apple’s next generation iOS processor, the AI module can create original artworks in a wide range of emulated media: painting, printmaking, photography, drawings, mixed and new media. With its sophisticated cognitive modelling capability, AI represents a significant step towards fully autonomous, computer-based art production, evaluation and appreciation.

AI employs a data architecture capable of learning and adapting to national and international trends, in order to stay up to date on the latest developments in contemporary art practice. Integrating this information using its nano tube-based multi-core creation engine and the world’s most sophisticated contextual buffering system, the AI algorithm creates a 4-dimensional dataspace in which original artworks are conceived, analyzed and appreciated using a multi-modal aesthetic stimulus response alogorithm.

A proprietary evaluation cascade filtering matrix ensures a critically informed feedback process, and the cognitive network can appreciate the resulting works and make an informed selection for both temporary and permanent archival storage.

But where is the Art?

With a total storage capacity of 500 petabytes ( 1PB= 1Billion Megabytes), the AI module is capable of creating, evaluating and appreciating up to 15,000 works of art per hour. Based on a contextually integrated set of  aesthetic and art historical criteria, a complex network of curatorial algorithms select an average of 1000 finished works per hour for permanent archival storage, which means that Gabriola Island is now producing more art per capita and time unit than Manhattan, Paris and London combined. How is that for the Isle of the Arts?
